Your air conditioner doesn’t make cold air out of nothing. It pulls heat and moisture out of the air in your home. It does this with a part called the evaporator coil. That coil normally stays cold, but not cold enough to freeze. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that regular care of your filters, coils, and refrigerant lines is key to the system working right.
When something disrupts that process, like blocked air or low refrigerant, the coil can get too cold. Moisture in the air then freezes right onto the coil instead of draining away. Once ice starts building, it tends to get worse. The ice itself blocks air even more.

Our cooling season here runs far longer than in most of the country, often eight or nine months a year. That means your filter, coils, and airflow parts work harder and longer than they would in a milder climate. A dirty filter that might take a season to cause problems elsewhere can become an issue here much faster, simply because the system runs so much more.
Humidity plays a role too. Southeast Texas air holds more moisture than drier regions. So when airflow gets restricted and a coil gets too cold, there’s more moisture around to freeze onto it. If you notice ice on your unit, a few steps can help before you call for service.
Turn off the air conditioner, but leave the blower fan running. This helps the ice thaw without adding more moisture to the mix. Forcing the system to keep cooling while it’s frozen can strain the compressor.
Check your air filter. If it looks dirty, replace it. This is the single most common fix homeowners can safely do themselves.
Give the system time to fully thaw. This can take several hours depending on how much ice has built up. Don’t try to chip or scrape ice off the coil. This can damage the delicate fins.
Once thawed, turn the system back on and watch for the ice returning. If it comes back quickly, that usually points to a cause beyond a simple filter, like a refrigerant leak or an airflow issue elsewhere in the system. That’s when it’s time to call a professional.
A frozen AC unit that keeps coming back after a filter change usually points to something a homeowner can’t safely diagnose or fix alone. Refrigerant leaks specifically need a licensed technician, since handling refrigerant is regulated by the EPA under the Clean Air Act.
