This shows up more in our climate specifically. A system that was barely capable in a milder region often gets fully exposed by a long, humid Gulf Coast cooling season.
A system that can’t handle humidity well, even while running nonstop, often costs more to keep patching than it does to replace with something sized right for your home.
Newer systems are generally built to higher efficiency standards than older models. Some qualify for federal tax credits or manufacturer rebates, though program details and eligibility change often. If you’re weighing a new install, check current requirements directly through ENERGY STAR or a tax professional rather than relying on older info. Credit amounts and qualifying efficiency ratings have shifted in recent years.
Beyond potential incentives, a new system typically comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. Often it comes with a separate labor warranty from the installing contractor too. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and by contractor. Ask directly what’s covered and for how long before you commit to either option.
